Tauranga City Council acknowledges the significant public interest in the Mauao landslide that occurred on Thursday, 22 January 2026.

This webpage has been established to provide the community with information relating to the events surrounding Mauao.

In the interests of transparency and keeping the public informed, Council is proactively releasing documents associated with the landslide.

Since the event, Council has received requests for information under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act (LGOIMA).

Publishing documents on this page enables information to be made available in an open and timely fashion, while ensuring the wider community can access the same material.

The first tranche of documents, consisting primarily of geotechnical reports and related technical material, is available below. Further information will be progressively added.

Consistent with Council’s responsibilities under LGOIMA, information is being made available unless there is good reason for withholding it. Where those good reasons exist, we have clearly marked each redaction with the relevant section of LGOIMA. Further details about the principle of availability and the statutory reasons for withholding information under LGOIMA are available on the webpage.

There are multiple active and independent inquiries underway, including by the Coroner, WorkSafe, Police, and an external review led by former High Court Judge Paul Davison KC with a central government inquiry pending. It is important to allow those processes to run their course, and so Council will not be making any further comment on the information at this time.

Grounds to withhold which have been made on grounds including:

Section 6(a) of LGOIMA - Maintenance of the law – where release would be likely to prejudice the maintenance of the law, including the prevention, investigation, and detection of offences, and the right to a fair trial.

Section 7(2)(a) of LGOIMA – Privacy – Withholding is necessary to protect the privacy of natural persons.

Section 7(2)(b)(i) of LGOIMA – Prejudice to third parties’ commercial position – Withholding of the information is necessary to protect information where the making available of the information would be likely unreasonably to prejudice the commercial position of the person who supplied or who is the subject of the information.

Section 7(2)(f)(i) of LGOIMA – Free and Frank Opinion – Withholding of the information is necessary to maintain the effective conduct of public affairs through the free and frank expression of opinions by or between or to members or officers or employees of any local authority in the course of their duty.

Section 7(2)(f)(ii) of LGOIMA - Withholding of the information is necessary to maintain the effective conduct of public affairs by protecting members, officers, employees, and others from improper pressure or harassment.

Section 7(2)(g) of LGOIMA – Legal professional privilege – Withholding of the information is necessary to maintain legal professional privilege.

Section 7(2)(h) of LGOIMA – Prejudice to Council’s commercial activities – Withholding of the information is necessary to enable any local authority holding the information to carry out, without prejudice or disadvantage, commercial activities.

Section 7(2)(i) of LGOIMA – Prejudice to Council’s negotiations – Withholding of the information is necessary to enable any local authority holding the information to carry on, without prejudice or disadvantage, negotiations (including commercial and industrial negotiations)
